Lesson Structure: Step 3 - Serial Position Effect

Mini-lessons - Serial Position Effect

Later, when we discuss 'lesson guide plans' we will show you a set of videos showing a full driving lesson. You will be able to see several mini-lessons.

But before we move on to the planning video it's worth understanding the concept of the ‘serial position effect' and ‘chunking''.

It doesn't matter if you don't remember the terminology used here, your main goal is to understand why we split lessons into separate definable chunks (mini-lessons).

The serial position effect

The serial-position effect is the tendency to recall the first and last items in a series most, and the middle items least. This is also known as the primacy and recency effect.

The diagram above shows a one-hour lesson with no discernible breaks in activity. The recall from the middle of the lesson would be poor.

Of course, there are lots of other things that can affect memory - but here we are simply focussing on the reason for lesson chunking/mini-lessons.
