Lesson Guide Plans: Introduction to the videos

Graham and John explain the format

These videos show a lesson with a customer who has expressed a wish to drive on faster open roads. The instructor feels that this is an appropriate subject for his experience and skill based on his achievements in their last driving lesson. The lesson starts in a busy area and then moves through different stages of open road driving, each with clear learning goals.

Lesson plans

Compare the lesson to the example lesson plan on the previous page and consider any additional notes that you might make for each mini-lesson.

You can download a pdf version of the lesson plan here - make a printout for easy reference as you watch the lesson and tick off each element as you identify it in the videos.

The lesson also shows a short change of plan after the learner makes mistake demonstrating the need for flexibility and deviation from the guide plan as and when necessary.

Making sense of the things you have been learning

In addition to the lesson planning element, this lesson is also designed to:

  • Help you understand more about lesson structure

  • Help you understand how you can start and end your lesson

  • Demonstrate the core skills that you have been learning about in a lesson context

As you watch the videos, in addition to noticing how the lesson follows the pre-determined guide, think about how it demonstrates the core skills that you have been learning about:

  • The feedback process

  • Explanations

  • Use of questions

  • Route directions

  • Job sharing

  • Watching the learner

  • Prompting skills

  • Remedial action

  • How the lesson keeps on theme

The following pages contain 16 videos, each showing a different part of the lesson in sequence.
