The walk-across rule is explained in this video from Watch, Learn, Drive.
When turning right you will need to help your learner to judge whether it is safe to cross the path of approaching traffic. A useful method is the 'walk across' rule.
See the diagram below.
If it is necessary to wait in position 'W' (note that this waiting position is not too far forward) ask learners whether they would have time to walk across the full width of the road in front of the approaching vehicles without causing them to change speed or direction - if the answer is 'yes' than it will be OK to drive across... BUT! Only if the new road is clear and it is safe to enter.
Keep control and do not allow the learner to 'rush'. This means that you must be watching the learner to see where he/she is looking, glancing into the new road to ensure that it's clear and also glancing ahead to make sure that their judgement of approaching traffic is OK and that there is sufficient time to turn.
The 'walk across rule' is explained in the 'in-depth' animated briefing for turning right at DriverActive. You need to be fully familiar with all of the aspects discussed in the briefing, however, a long explanation would normally be inappropriate in the car - direct your learners to DriverActive for lesson preparation and revision.
