Turn-in-the-road

This exercise is no longer included in ADI Part Two, however, as we have mentioned with earlier reversing manoeuvres, it's important that you are able to do it, and teach it, correctly and safely as it is still in the DVSA driving syllabus. Some learners have ended up with a test failure following a wrong turn after which they were unable to turn the car around safely in order to return to the correct route.

Other Road Users

The video above discusses giving 'instructions' to other road users. When working as an instructor be aware that you should never need to wave to other drivers:

  1. Because they can make their own decisions and you can adjust your actions to fit in with those decisions.

  2. It is good practice to stick with the signals shown in the Highway Code - unofficial signals can cause confusion. For example, a driver giving way to someone doing a turn-in-the road might be doing so because of an accident or other bad past experience in a similar situation. An 'instruction' to go through could put pressure on the driver leading to a potentially dangerous situation.

Drivers and driving instructors are not traffic controllers!

Sometimes a driving instructor will choose to wave other drivers through to ease the pressure on the learner during manoeuvres or in other situations, however, the reason that the pressure is there in the first place is more than likely due to poor route and lesson planning. The learner should either not be doing the manoeuvre, or doing it in a much quieter location.

Overview

Study the turn-in-the-road at DriverActive and then complete the project

Project

Complete this manoeuvre a couple of times in a quiet location - noticing just haw much observation is needed to be 100% sure that the road is clear all around - just like in car parks..

After your first practise session read the DriverActive notes again and ask yourself whether you are completing the right-reverse correctly.
