Moving off and Stopping goals

Your goal:

  • To enable your customer to move off and stop safely under full control and with appropriate observation checks.

Customer's goals:

To understand the need for and demonstrate appropriate actions required to move off and stop including the ability to:

Moving off:

  • Start the engine safely

  • Select first gear.

  • Set the gas.

  • Find the clutch biting point.

  • Make effective observation before moving off (including blind spots)

  • Signal where necessary and correctly before moving off

  • Release the handbrake

  • Co-ordinate the gas pedal and clutch when moving from a standstill

  • Steer to a safety line

Stopping:

  • Stop smoothly without pitching forward

  • Co-ordinate use of footbrake and clutch when stopping

  • Stop smoothly without pitching forward on a downhill gradient*

  • Stop smoothly at a pre-determined spot without use of the footbrake on an uphill gradient*

  • Secure the car after stopping when appropriate (handbrake/neutral)

  • Recognise a safe and legal position to stop

  • Stop the car parallel to the kerb

  • When required, give an appropriate signal before stopping

*While these are basic requirements, it might not be appropriate to cover them on the first lesson.
