Crossroads

Lesson goals

Your goal:

To make sure that your customer can recognise and deal with crossroads using the hazard routine and making full observation checks.

Learner's goals:

To understand the need for and demonstrate appropriate actions at crossroad including the ability to:

  • Recognise crossroads

  • Use mirrors appropriately on approach

  • Time signals correctly without misleading

  • Position correctly on approach to crossroads

  • Regulate speed correctly when approaching allowing for road and traffic conditions

  • Giving priority when necessary

  • Adopt a good waiting position when giving way to approaching vehicles on right turns

  • Make safety checks after turning

  • Apply all of the above at both marked and unmarked crossroads

Note that these are generic lesson goals. Individual learners will have specific personal goals and other goals related to different aspects of learning but still relevant to the lesson. The lesson goals shown here are to help you to break down the process and skill into it's component parts.

Using the videos below as a basis for a lesson you could develop lessons for both beginners or more advanced learners.

A beginners lesson would focus on recognising, turning left, turning right and going ahead (each topic forming a mini-lesson within the overall lesson). A more advanced crossroads lesson might cover a recap of the basics followed by 'mini lessons' covering Nearside/Offside passing, staggered and Unmarked crossroads.
