If you are intending to do this lesson for your exam we recommend that you choose a beginner and combine emerging with approaching to turn left. The lesson format would be to start with approaching, practise two or three approaches - depending on what your route allows - and then introduce emerging.
When teaching a beginner, drive the car from the test centre to a suitable location; use the drive-out to demonstrate use of the MSM routine at all junctions and observation in emerging situations. You can involve the learner with questions and get them to help with decision making when emerging.
The video on this page shows a demonstration rather than a briefing for this lesson - use whatever method suits your learner best.
If you are doing a lesson to develop or correct emerging skills with a fairly experienced learner the drive is likely to start in test centre car park - this means that the first emerge situation will be leaving the car park to join the road. Many car parks join the road by crossing a footpath and so the learner might need to be reminded of the need to be look out for, and give way to, pedestrians as well as vehicles. Some test candidates are caught out by this 'first emerge manoeuvre'; they feel that the test hasn't probably started until the car is out on the road.
Remember, the test starts the moment that the examiner gets into the car and that you are dealing with anything that arises during the lesson - not just emerging.
