Dual-controls - Introduction

Instructor's use of controls

If you use the dual footbrake and/or clutch or any other control, the learner must be made aware of the reasons.

In the early stages of learning you might operate some controls, typically demisters and heater controls, to allow the learner to concentrate on the road - if you do this, make sure the learner understands what you are doing and when that responsibility will pass to them.

Using any of the vehicle controls with a test-standard can almost certainly be considered as unnecessary. During the driving test the learner may be asked to operate demisters, wipers, etc., while the car is moving and would be expected to use any controls necessary for safety as a matter of course.

Dual controls: The primary purpose of dual-controls is to 'prevent the leakage of blood and displacement of essential body parts'.

If the 'duals' are used for this purpose inform the driver and stop to discuss the problem. If you intend to use the dual-controls for any other reason explain your plan in advance and make it clear that your actions are for demonstration purposes.
