Dual Carriageways -v- multi-lane roads

Dual carriageways can have any number of lanes - in some places there might be just a single lane. However, for a road to be a dual-carriageway there must be a physical barrier separating the two sides.

Dual Carriageways - speed limits

The speed limit on a dual-carriageway will reflect the dangers that are present. For example, an urban dual-carriageway with a footpath might be as low as 30, or even 20 mph.

As general rule, out of town dual-carriageway speed limits will be between 50 and 70 mph - you must always be on the lookout for road signs, and clues.
