Approaching junctions to turn right: Talk-through

The 'walk across' rule

The walk-across rule is explained in this video from Watch, Learn, Drive.

General teaching information

Right turn diagramWhen turning right you will need to help your pupil judge whether it is safe to cross the path of approaching traffic. A useful method is the 'walk across' rule.

If it is necessary to wait in position 'W' (note that this waiting position is not too far forward) ask your pupil if he/she would have time to walk across in front of the approaching vehicles without causing them to change speed or direction - if the answer is 'yes' than it will be OK to drive across...

BUT! Only if the new road is clear and it is safe to enter. Keep control and do not allow the pupil to 'rush'.

This means that you must be watching the pupil to see where he/she is looking, glancing into the new road to ensure that it's clear and therefore safe to proceed and also glancing ahead to make sure that your pupil's judgement is OK and that there is sufficient time to turn.

Note that this method works best when the pupil imagines him/herself walking across the full width of the road.

The 'walk across rule' is explained in the learners briefing for turning right at DriverActive. While you need to be fully familiar with all of the aspects discussed in this briefing, however, a long explanation (as shown) would normally be inappropriate in the car.
