Approaching junctions to turn left: Introduction
'Approaching' describes turning from a major road to a minor road; this will usually include detailed information about the MSM-PSL routine.
Because of the limitation of available routes in some areas this subject will often be combined with emerging left in the same lesson. If this is the case you would practice two or three approaches and then brief for the emerging element - you could then drive around a block that includes both junction types.
In a well structured course of driving lessons its important to help your pupils move through a process which takes them from easy to difficult and from simple to the complex. This is why we start on quiet roads and build up to busier roads as learners build up their skills - with this in mind the initial left turn lesson should be in a very quiet a location with as little traffic as possible - a quiet housing estate or an industrial estate on a Sunday would be ideal.
