Lesson Goals
Your goal:
Your pupil will be able to stop quickly and under full control when given the appropriate signal for a simulated emergency stop, know the theory of skid control, and recognise that basic defensive driving practice should reduce or eliminate the need for an emergency stop.
Learner's goals:
To understand the need for and demonstrate where appropriate:
- The importance of avoiding emergencies and how to drive defensively
- The distance that it takes to stop at any given speed
- The affect of weather and road surface on stopping distances
- Reaction times and the factors that affect them
- How to stop quickly and safely
- The role of the mirrors in a controlled (emergency) stop situation
- Basic operation of ABS systems
- The relationship between steering and braking in emergencies
- The procedure for the test (and practise) exercise
- What to do after stopping in the test/practise exercises
- What to do after stopping in a real emergency
- How to control skids caused by braking, acceleration and steering
Note that these are generic lesson goals. Individual learners will have specific personal goals and other goals related to different aspects of learning but still relevant to the lesson. The lesson goals shown here are to help you to break down the process and skill into it's component parts.
