The information in the 'issues' videos and text relates to basic errors and their correction and assume that the errors are caused directly by the actions of the learner. However, you must always be certain that you are not contributing to the error by late or unclear instruction or direction or by not offering sufficient information or feedback.

Our suggested issues do not form an exhaustive list, however, if you can notice and sort out these problems you should be well on your way to delivering an effective approaching lesson. Remember that ideally the only thing you are watching for is a perfect drive... Anything else is a problem!

Not starting the MSM routine with mirrors

There are really only two reasons for this error.

One: Insufficient support where required: Make sure that you give enough help and support; this might mean giving a full talk-through with regard to the mirrors in the early stages of learning the MSM routine and when moving into busier traffic for the first time - however, always be aware that 'talk through' can help form habits but is not a good tool to help deep learning - aim to keep your direct input to a minimum,

Two: Lack of understanding: Ask questions to ensure that your pupils understand why it is important to start the MSM routine with the mirrors.

The answers you might expect are things like "To ensure that it is safe to carry out the manoeuvre" or "To check for threats from behind".

Answers like "To see what's behind" do not demonstrate understanding - if you get an answer like this it's essential that you follow up with another question, for example "And why do you need to know what's behind?"
