Emerging left - Demonstration to teach emerging

The lesson

MSM

If you are intending to do this lesson for your exam we would recommend that you choose a beginner and combine this with 'Approaching to turn left'.

The lesson format would be to start with approaching, practise two or three approaches - depending on what your route allows - and then introduce emerging.

When teaching a beginner for the exam, drive the car to a suitable location using your drive to demonstrate use of the MSM routine at all junctions and observation in emerging situations. You can involve the learner with questions and get them to help with decision making when emerging.

The video on this page shows a demonstration rather than briefing for this lesson - use whatever method suits your learner the best, bearing in mind that if doing this on an exam lesson you will already have been demonstrating on the way to the location.

If you are developing/correcting emerging skills with a fairly experienced learner for your exam (we don't recommend this) your drive might start in test centre car park - this means that the first emerge situation will be leaving the car park to join the main road.

As many car parks join the main road by crossing the footpath you will need to be looking out and giving way to pedestrians as well as vehicles. Some test candidates are caught out by this ' first emerge manoeuvre'; they feel that the test hasn't probably started until the car is out on the road.

Remember, the test starts the moment that the examiner gets into the car and that you are dealing with anything that arises during the lesson - not just emerging.

Next: Step 3 - Rolling first gear.
