Additional study

DVSA bookThis page briefly explains Part-One of the exam and how to make best use of multiple-choice questions from other sources, for example books, DVD's or web sites.

If you are a SmartDriving Customer you already have a ready source of additional questions on the Focus DVD (make sure that you select the ADI test option).

However, we suggest that you start by reading the information about memory and recall.

This is the final unit -when you have finished this unit you have completed the first part of your iCourse programme.

You will need the additional question worksheets to complete this unit - the download link is at the bottom of this page.

Memory and recall

This short single page tutorial covers some information you already know + some new stuff.

By applying the principles when reading the DVSA and other questions you will increase your recall of the answers. Click here to start.

When you have read the tutorial page, continue below.

The DVSA questions

This part of your course is based on primarily on questions from the DVSA question bank. These are available on the disc supplied with your iCourse (the questions are also available from other sources both online and in print).

If you have arrived at this page without completing the earlier parts of the course as suggested in the guidance notes please click here.

Test marking

The test questions are 'banded' into the following four categories

The pass mark for the multiple choice part of the theory test is 85%. This means that you must answer 85 questions answered correctly.

However, you must also reach a minimum of 80% (20 out of 25) in each of the four bands. It is therefore possible for you to get an overall mark as high as 94% but still fail the examination if you got six questions wrong that were all in the same band.

ClockUsing the DVSA and other questions

To ensure that you have a full range of knowledge, we suggest that you complete all the ADI questions on the supplied CD/DVD, the learner questions in the SmartDriving Free Theory App and questions from any other reliable source - such as the DVSA itself.

If you have been working through the course as directed you should now need very little study time when answering extra questions. The course units will have prepared you thoroughly. This 'practise time' is optional and the form provided below will enable you to 'formalise' your study of any questions from sources outside iCourse.

The question marking sheet provided follows a similar format, but this time you simply mark your 'confidence score'.

Ask yourself, 'Do I really know this' – trust your feeling and be honest, otherwise you will just be cheating yourself.

Research the answers that have a low confidence score using your reference books and other information sources and then start your next session by returning to the 'low confidence' questions, reallocating a confidence rating.

Download your marking/log sheets by clicking HERE. (The file allows you to record your scores and other info for up to 50 questions from any source - print further copies as required)
