The Hazard Perception Test (HPT)
As you complete the final Units you will also need to prepare for the Hazard Perception Test element of Part-One.
This Special Study Unit explains how to use the HPT disc provided* and how to 'read' the clips and click for developing hazards.
Complete this unit before moving on to Unit 16 and then continue your HPT preparation alongside the rest of your study.
*Note: If you have not had a disc and are using online clips for the HPT, skip step 3, disc setup. All of the other information is still applicable.
HPT...
The HPT is an integral element of the first part of your ADI exam.
In the test you will complete the Hazard Perception Test after you have completed the multiple-choice questions.
The video on the right shows the DVSA advice for learner-drivers using one of the latest computer generated clips - while the scoring is different for learners, the ADI test works in the same way.
You can get up to 5 points for each hazard. You need to score at least 57 points out of 75 to pass this part.
We do not produce a dedicated product to prepare you for your HPT, however we do provide an HPT disk in your study pack; there are also several products available on the market and online for you to practice with including the SmartDriving Free Theory and Hazard Perception App for learner drivers, however, we suggest that you stick with the supplied disc for the time being - this will be sufficient to get you through your qualification.
NOTE: If you do purchase and additional product for HPT practise please bear in mind that the vast majority of products are designed for learners - and you must be aware that the learners pass mark is lower than that required from in the ADI test.
Theory Questions
The Focus DVD disc provided to SmartDriving customers also has ADI theory questions - please do not study these until after you have finished all of the Part-One theory study units, you can then use them as a revision tool and for final test preparation.
When you are ready to start your HPT practise return to this unit for information about how to set up the disc and complete the tests.
This DVD provides lots of practise material and is calibrated reasonably close to the actual DVSA clips. The following pages (steps 2 to 6) explain how to set up and use the DVD and give advice about the best way to approach the Hazard Perception Test.
