Practise and testing FAQ

The Focus DVD has advice and recommendations built in to the package to ensure that you know exactly what to do but before starting with the disc.

The frequently asked questions and answers below address many of the myths and misleading advice that you might have found about the test if you have doing some online research.

Q: Why do we have to do this test as part of the ADI qualification process - after all we are experienced drivers?

A: There are a couple of reasons. Firstly, after you qualify you will be teaching your customers how to do the test - the best way to understand what you are teaching is to complete the process yourself. Second, many experienced drivers do not have fine tuned hazard perception skills - the video clips can help you to develop your skills further, regardless of your starting point.

Q:
Can I cheat the test by simply clicking rapidly every few seconds?

A: There are a couple of things here. firstly, why would you want to cheat the test? Second by practising and getting a feel for the test you will be able to pass it easily, and help your future customers to pass it evenly.

The software is calibrated in such a way that it will recognise patterns of clicks and know if you are trying to cheat - the clicks it recognizes as 'cheating' are not counted and you could lose all of your points for the clip.

Q:
Do I have to be very careful and not click too often?

A: Not at all, you can click quite a lot and still not be penalised, the important thing here is, you should only be clicking for the hazards that you see, not just clicking indiscriminately. We recommend a couple of clicks at most for each hazard - although three clicks can sometimes be helpful for things that you spot very early.

Q:
I've heard that experienced drivers have problems because they click too soon.

A: Yes and this can be a problem; however it is easily overcome by following the advice offered in this unit.

Next: Step 3 explains how to set up your DVD - this is important, if you do not set the disc up correctly you will get misleading HPT results.
