Basic Driving Skills

This self-development basic skills element of your course is designed to make sure that you are up to date with modern driving practise and that your driving meets a basic standard.

Many people who set out to become driving instructors do so because they believe themselves to be above average drivers. Sometimes this is true, they might have passed advanced tests or driven for the emergency services, but sometimes their skills might not be as good as they suspect – especially if they learned some years ago.

There can be issues even with very experienced drivers – we have encountered police class one drivers who have failed Part-Two for very basic errors. Not because they are not good drivers but because they may have become complacent about their driving.

Paying attention to the basics of driving serves two purposes.

  1. It helps to ensure that you have a good foundation upon which to build and improve your driving skills.
  2. It reminds you about the basic details you will need to consider when teaching new drivers from scratch.

In this part of your course you will:

  • Become fully familiar with the Show Me Tell Me driving test questions
  • Check that your eyesight still meets the ADI Standard
  • Consider pre-driving checks and the drivers cockpit drill
  • Practise the basic routines for moving off and stopping
  • Make sure that your driving follows a routine
  • Consider a routine approach and practise driving through a range of junction type
  • Make sure you are fully familiar with uphill and downhill driving
  • Practise 'modern' gear use
  • Complete an emergency stop exercise (as tested)
