Show tell questions

The Vehicle Safety Check questions were introduced in September 2003 to make sure that all driving test candidates understand basic car-care and are able to operate all the vehicle controls. The questions were updated in 2017 to include questions asked while the car is on the move.

You don't have to be a mechanic to drive a car or to be an ADI - but there are some safety critical areas that you must be aware of to make sure that you and your future customers remain safe and within the law.

All of the items that are covered in this unit are those that would normally be done in daily or weekly vehicle checks and some have already been covered in the Car-Care units.

Driving test questions

While the ADI Show/Tell questions are the same as those asked to basic driving test candidates, the pass requirement is higher. 'L' test candidates are asked two questions about the operation and maintenance of the vehicle used for test,  ADI Part-Two candidates are asked five questions.

The examiner will ask you:

  • Three ‘tell me’ question (where you explain how you’d carry out a safety task) at the start of your test, before you start driving
  • Two ‘show me’ question (where you show how you’d carry out a safety task) while you’re driving

You’ll get a driving fault for each incorrect answer you give.

Given that you are only allowed a maximum of six driving faults during the test you cannot afford to answer any of these questions incorrectly!

The examiner will be assessing:

  • The accuracy of your answers
  • Your understanding of the relevant information
  • Your safety awareness when completing the checks

Note: This video is designed by the DVSA for learner drivers and therefore states that only two questions will be asked - remember that you will have to answer five questions.
