The video briefing above is taken from the Watch, Learn, Drive 3D video app. It gives an overview of the full hazard routine.
The full MSM routine is broken down as MS-PS-LADA.
In order to develop your skills quickly and intuitively, you might find that the easiest way to start, or refresh, your 'systematic' driving approach is with the abbreviated version of the full routine - MSPSG.
The 'MSPSG' routine assumes that observation will carry on throughout the manoeuvre. The routine is easy to remember and helps develop systematic control by emphasising the link between speed and gears.
In practical driving the MSM and MSPSG routines are only a guide. It will almost always be necessary to make more than the one mirror check suggested in the routines and will constantly be scanning the road for information.
A real 'expert driver' will have a degree of flexibility within the hazard routine that will protect them in the event of something unexpected happening. But of course, by adopting a systematic, routine approach to driving you will minimise the chances of being taken by surprise on the road.
The next few pages explore each element of the hazard routine.
Next: Step 3 - Starting the routine by checking your mirrors.
