Goals and example videos
The goals for this exercise are the same as they would be for any other manoeuvre where the driver is the 'odd one out', for example turning the car around, reversing into gateways. etc.
The video examples are taken from the Watch, Learn, Drive programme for learner drivers and show the manoeuvre step-by-step, including the driving test requirements.
Goals
Your goal:
To ensure that your learner understands the reasons for reversing into a parking, can recognise and select a safe space, and is able to park in a gap not longer than two car lengths.
Pupil's goals:
To understand the need for parallel parking and:
- Recognise a safe, legal and convenient location
- Ensure that the road is clear before starting the manoeuvre
- Maintain full control of the car at all times while parking
- Maintain reasonable accuracy
- Use effective, all around, observation throughout the manoeuvre
- Deal with other road users appropriately
Note that these are generic lesson goals. Individual learners will have specific personal goals and other goals related to different aspects of learning but still relevant to the lesson. The lesson goals shown here are to help you to break down the process and skill into it's component parts.
The diagram on the right shows the positioning as explained in the Part-Two driving section of this course.
Example Videos from Watch, Learn, Drive
Using the videos below as a basis for a lesson you could develop lessons for both beginners or more advanced learners on busier roads.
A beginners lesson would focus on gaining the basic control and observation skills to complete this manoeuvre on a quiet wide road where there is plenty of room for other vehicles to pass, a more advance lesson would enable the learner to transfer their skills to busier situations and could include both up and downhill gradients.
