Examples of directions in different situations

Crossroads / Traffic Lights / Roundabouts and similar situations...

crossroad

An example of where a command like 'go straight on' could lead to disaster. Your pupil could interpret "Straight on" as an instruction to proceed without checking...

Suggested direction: "Follow the road ahead please"

Second left

Second junction

In this example the driver of the orange car might not be aware that there is a junction around the bend. To ensure that the driver knows exactly what is required the instructor uses the direction:

Suggested direction: "Take the second road to the left please; the first road is just around the bend."

Left turn

T junction

In this example the instructor would use the 'basic' direction for T-junctions.

"At the end of the road, turn to the left please."

or

"Take the road leading to the left please"

Right Turn

Right turn

Very straightforward; gains attention 'I'd like you to take'; defines the location 'the first road'; and finishes with the direction 'on the right'.

Suggested direction: "I'd like you to take the first road on the right please"

Roundabout

Roundabout

Here the instruction makes the junction type clear (roundabout), the direction clear (given early enough for a necessary lane change) and a confirmation to ensure the correct road is selected ('the fourth exit').

Suggested direction: "At the roundabout, I would like you to take the road leading to the right, that's the fourth exit"

See the next step for roundabouts.
