Developing your self-motivation

Contract with yourselfThere are many different types of motivation – we are all individual beings with differing wants and needs. However, motivation can be broadly broken down into two areas:

This means that in your desire to become a driving instructor some of your motivation will be linked to experiences that you might want to move away from, for example, bad pay, poor working conditions, unemployment.

On the other hand there will be experiences that you want to move towards, for example, job satisfaction, more freedom, better pay, or perhaps a shiny blue sports car for the weekend!

When you think about an experience that you want to move away from you may get bad feelings; this is especially true if find yourself actually re-living the experiences in your memory by seeing through your own eyes and hearing what you heard at the time.

These bad feelings are like a signal (to your brain) that you have to do something to move away from the bad experience that causes them.

However, bad feelings do not necessarily indicate precisely what it is that you need to do, they don't give a forward direction, they simply leave you feeling discontented in some way.

When you imagine new experiences that you want to move towards, looking at them through you own eyes and hearing what you will hear when you have gained your success, then you get good feelings.

These good feelings show the direction in which you need to move in order to gain new experiences that are satisfying, rewarding, and that make you feel good.

Both towards and away motivation can be useful in helping you to achieve your goals.

Motivation exercise No. 2

Using the worksheet you have already downloaded, now write down all of the thoughts that come to mind when you think about why you want to become a driving instructor.

If you have not completed exercise No.1, CLICK HERE NOW to go back to the relevant page now - and a gentle reminder... The quickest and best way to qualify is to follow the course as directed.

Notice that the worksheet provides space for two lists. One list for things you want to move away from, and another for those things you want to move towards - add thoughts to each list.

The process or writing out your lists will help you to motivate yourself to do the work that is necessary to qualify – and take a step towards achieving your dreams. Come back to the lists at any time to add new stuff or simply to remind yourself of why you are starting a new career.
