A good commentary includes information about:

• The driver's actions

• Weather conditions

• The actions of other road users

• Time and location

• Physical features of the road

• The characteristics of the road surface

• Traffic signs and road markings

While talking about all the factors listed above the driver will be anticipating the likely outcome of any developing situation and the action that will be taken to negotiate that situation safely.

By talking out loud you will start to 'prioritise' areas which require a specific course of action – in turn this will help to raise your awareness of the importance of planning ahead.
