Weekly vehicle checks
Note that a weekly interval is the minimum for the checks shown on this page and project worksheet.
Because your car will be covering an above average mileage (compared to the average family car) you might need to check some items more often.
For example: in the winter you will probably use more screen washer fluid - imagine a scenario where a driving test is abandoned by the examiner because the windscreen became too dirty for safe driving, all because you forgot to check the screen wash level (and imagine just how much that simple mistake might cost you...)
Once a week you should check the following items:
- Engine oil level
- Engine coolant level
- Brake, clutch and steering fluid levels
- Screen-wash level
- Battery electrolyte level*
- Fan belt tension
- Wiper blade condition
*Most batteries are now 'sealed for life' and do not require checking.
If you are unsure about how to carry out these checks you should consult your vehicle handbook or local garage.
Project
Download your Weekly Checks project worksheet here.
Print out your Weekly Checks project worksheet and then carry out the checks on your vehicle. Either correct, or make a note to correct any issues that you discover. Remember that a poorly maintained car costs money and increases your risk of having a crash.

If there are any elements of the quiz that you are not 100% sure about, redo all, or the relevant parts of this unit.
