With proper observation and accuracy
Position 1
Make sure that you complete the normal safely checks before moving off. This might seem obvious, however, when focusing on the turn during the test it's the obvious things that get missed!
It is not necessary to give a signal. For more information about why read the DriverActive advice here before moving on.
Do not start the turn if there are vehicles approaching unless you are 100% certain that you will not cause them any inconvenience.
Be aware that pedestrians on the opposite footpath might not realise what you are doing.
Steer briskly as soon as the car is moving - low speed, quick steering.
There is a key secret to success with this and all other slow speed manoeuvres - the clue is in the name 'SLOW SPEED manoeuvres'! Dead slow with lots of observation.
Note: 'Dry steering' – Turning the wheel while the car is stationary is usually considered by the DVSA to be harmful to the steering mechanism and tyres, even in vehicles with power assisted steering. Dry steering may incur a driver error on part-Two and other advanced driving tests.
Position 2
Make sure that you check all around before starting to reverse. You must be looking behind when you start to reverse. Get into the habit of preparing the car, checking right and left (giving way to others if required) and then looking out of the rear screen before releasing the handbrake.
Position 3
Relax! the main thing here is full all around observation before completing the final leg of the turn. Avoid the learner driver's trap of watching the front of the car - focus on where you want the car to go.
Next: Move on to step 4 for important information about dealing with other road users during this manoeuvre.
