Turn-in-the-road - How did you do?
Starting position
Make sure that the road and footpath is clear all around before starting. Six point check and then start to move slowly forwards before steering. Looking at this picture, why might this not be a good position to start this manoeuvre with a beginner? (Clue: What's on the footpath next to the car?). Use the arrows (right of the image) to scroll through the other steps of the manoeuvre.
Steering across
Get full lock quickly while keeping the speed down using clutch control. Allow yourself to make extra checks to the right and left. If you look closely you will see the driver in the picture checking over his right shoulder at this point.
Approaching the kerb
As you approach the opposite kerb control your speed with the footbrake if necessary (clutch down) and steer briskly to the right in preparation for reversing.
Reversing
Use the handbrake while stopped and start to make sure that the road is clear before reversing - this means looking all around. When you are 100% sure that it is safe, look around over your left shoulder and release the handbrake Note that you look back before you start to move back. As you approach the kerb, switch you observation to your right shoulder and steer right in preparation for the final leg of the turn.
Finishing
On your test the examiner will either ask you to drive on, in which case you can check your mirrors and proceed if safe (has a waiting driver moved out to overtake you?). Alternatively the examiner might wait for you to pull in and park on the left. If you park, remember your normal MSM checks.
Next: When you are happy that you are consistently reaching a good standard on your practise sessions, complete the checklist and questions for this unit.
