Goals - What do you want to achieve?
The 'What do you want?' worksheets are the starting point for each practise session in the car.
Because these worksheets are so important we recommend that you print off a 'stock' of them or download and store the file in a handy place - perhaps your desktop.
Get into the habit of using a 'What do you want?' worksheet before every driving session completing the sheet as explained below.
Using the worksheet
Use the 'What do you want' sheet to record, in as much detail as possible, what you want to achieve from each training exercise.
Your list could include driving qualities, personal feelings (e.g., more confidence), or anything else that is important for you and/or meets the criteria for the exercise.
As a starting point, you can list some 'global' outcomes - things that you would like to achieve by the end of the programme.
The 'What do you want' sheet has two questions
-
What are the three main things that I want to gain during this session?
-
How will I know when I have achieved my goals?
As a starting point you can modify the first question to 'What are the three main things that I want to gain from this course?'
You might also want to use the worksheets for particular sections or units of the course overall (not just the in car stuff)?
(Note that completion of the worksheets is a compulsory requirement on some course options - see your course terms and conditions for more information).
Working out what you want
The more you use the sheet to set goals for yourself, the more you will gain from the course.
Success psychologists say that 95% - 97% of the people in the world do NOT have written goals and fail, while 3-5% have written goals and succeed
To help you to find the three main things that you want to achieve we have supplied an exercise that is called 'Scaling' (in Step 5). Following the simple steps in the exercise will help you to determine each target item on your list.
Scaling is a deceptively powerful teaching tool. Getting used to using it for yourself will prepare you for using it with your pupils.
Note: You will also be using Scaling in your personal driving assessment and so it is important that you learn and understand the method fully.
Next: Download the worksheet and think of three things that you want from this course - then move on to Step 3.
Note: Do not answer the 'Evidence' question yet - you will read about this in Step 3.
